Frequently Asked Questions About Pulse Surveys

A pulse survey comprises fewer questions than an employee survey and is conducted more frequently. Employee surveys, covering a broader range of topics, rely on extensive, company-wide follow-up processes. In contrast, a pulse survey aims to quickly and continuously address employee feedback.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The thematic focuses heavily depend on the chosen use case and associated positioning. Generally, topics such as leadership, engagement, values, and culture can be covered. However, it’s essential to consider that not all topics are suitable for more frequent assessments. For changes in values or cultural structures, it often takes several months to see any change. Therefore, pulse surveys with longer cycles of 3 to 6 months should be employed in such cases. Similarly, questions requiring change in large companies follow a similar pattern. Hence, it’s crucial to carefully examine the thematic focuses and tailor them to the use case to achieve meaningful results.

For continuous pulse surveys, cycles of three to four centrally initiated surveys per year have proven effective. This allows for selecting survey timings that align with your company’s needs while also preventing survey fatigue.

Assuming a cycle of three to four surveys per year, a range of 5-15 questions is ideal. This scope provides sufficient points of reference for meaningful results and effective follow-up processes while allowing for a strong focus. If you conduct pulse surveys more frequently, fewer questions are recommended.

At HRinstruments, results are available upon completion of the survey. The results are anonymized to ensure no individual identification is possible. Access to the report can be configured by the creator of the pulse survey, typically including departmental managers and/or HR personnel.
